What is an alternative sewer system?
An alternative septic system is any type of building wastewater (also called “effluent”) drainage system that deviates from the standard septic tank. There are various ways other than a conventional septic system to divert and clean water waste from your home and safely reintroduce it back into the environment!
How do you find a sewer line in an old house?
Go to the city office directly or call them to see if they can tell you where the sewer line is located. Usually, they can show you where the line goes from your home to the city's main line. If you are unable to reach the city, see if there is an interactive underground utility map of your area online.

Sewer self-purification is the ability of sewer pipes to passively treat wastewater through microbial activity. It can be enhanced through the promotion and retention of biomass growth inside sewer pipes.
What happens when a sewer line collapses?
If the pipe is collapsed or clogged, then the water has nowhere to go. It then reverses and uses the path of least resistance. That's likely the lowest drain in the basement. If the pipe is collapsed and there is access to the dirt surrounding the pipe, the dirt will slowly absorb the water, and the water recedes.
